Estimated tax payments, what the heck? Why do you have to pay estimated taxes? Because you owed more then $1,000.00 at the end of the year. The IRS and the State want quarterly payments the second year you expect to owe more than $1,000.00. They payments are based on last years figures or this year if you have them.

The Cost of Not Filing. Fasten your seat belt.

100% penalty for failure to file. 50% penalty for late filing. 11% compounded quarterly. 5% of principle until paid in full. The state follows with the similar amounts. The IRS has a 3 to 5 year plan. You must be able to pay more then $20.00 a month. The state has a new payment plan. It requires a lot of paper work that must be done quickly and must be accurate. A finacial statement, bank statements and credit card statements may be required to go longer then one year. When you sign up for these plans you are in agreement with filing and paying all future tax issues in a timely manner. They will garnish you if you fail to keep your side of the deal.

You can triple the amount owed in a few years. Always file even if you can't pay! Payment plans are available and easy to set up. Offer in Compromise are more difficult and require lots of paper work. You must have positive cash flow to qualify for this option. The nugget is file even if you can't pay. A payment plan is much better than a demand for payment followed by a garnishment followed by levy. Your bank, trust and inheritance can all be levied.

Payments

The last few years I have been accepting payments after the tax return is filed. I got burned for about $5,000 last year on clients who decided not to pay me. Please plan on paying for your return at the appointment. If you can not then I will efile your return when I get payment from you. If you are having problems and are depending on your refund to pay bills then you should consider going to one of the services that offer to take their fee out of your refund. I am not set up to do that nor do I want to give 5% to the big banks.

I WILL NOT BE FILING EXTENSIONS FOR 2012 EXCEPT FOR EXTREME SITUATIONS

I am reverting back to my old policy of not filing extensions. You can file your own. I will not chase you down to remind you. The dawg ate my W2 is not a real excuse. Here are some real ones: Extreme health issues, foreclosure, moving, family issues. Regardless of all the hullabaloo nothing has changed for the 2011 tax returns. Some credits have expired and some have reverted to 2007 rules. Standard deductions and exemption go up a tiny bit each year. Limits go a little higher but that happens every year. 2011 is about the same as 2010.

What's the best way to keep track of tax deductions? Start a monthly file of Medical, contributions etc. Then it is not so overwhelming at the end of the year or should I say April 14th at midnight! If you are a business or run a small part time business you should be totaling up your books once a month. If you don't know how I have several bookkeepers that I work with that can do it for you.
